Co2 Solubility in Martian Basalts and Applications to Atmospheric Evolution

چکیده
Introduction: A strong early Martian greenhouse atmosphere is required to account for evidence of liquid water on the surface of Mars [e.g. 1]. Many models of Mars’ atmospheric evolution incorporate magmatic outgassing fluxes of CO2 based on analogy to terrestrial magmas [2-5]. Here we investigate the solubility of carbon dioxide in Martian analogue basaltic melts at 2.0 GPa to constrain this important variable. Experiments: The starting material was a synthetic basalt composition obtained from Justin Filiberto at the LPI based on surface measurements of the Adirondack-class basalt “Humphrey” by the Spirit rover (see Table 1). Carbon dioxide was added as silver oxalate, Ag2(CO2)2.

The carbon dioxide solubility in alkali basalts: an experimental study
Experiments were conducted to determine CO2 solubilities in alkali basalts from Vesuvius, Etna and Stromboli. The basaltic melts were equilibrated with nearly pure CO2 at 1200°C under oxidizing conditions, and at pressures ranging from 269 to 2060 bars. CO2 solubility was determined by FTIR measurements. The results show that alkalis have a strong effect on the CO2 solubility and confirm and re...

The simplified perturbed chain statistical associating fluid theory (sPC-SAFT) Equation of State (EOS) was proposed to describe the thermodynamic properties of pure ionic liquids (ILs). A set of sPC-SAFT parameters for 2 ILs was obtained by fitting the experimental liquid densities data over a wide range of temperature at atmospheric pressure. Good agreement with experimental density data was o...
متن کاملCOMPARING THE EFFECTS OF H2O, F, AND Cl ON NEAR-LIQUIDUS PHASE EQUILIBRIA OF A MODEL HIGH-Fe BASALT: IMPLICATIONS FOR VOLATILE INDUCED MANTLE
Introduction: Volatile species, such as H2O, CO2, F, and Cl, are important in the generation and differentiation of basaltic melts. On the Earth, dissolved H2O (or in certain circumstances CO2) is thought to be the dominant volatile in most basaltic magmas. Therefore, significant effort has been placed on understanding how water and CO2 affect basalt genesis and crystallization of terrestrial m...
متن کاملThe Role of Carbonates in the Evolution of Early Martian Oceans
Central to the question of life on Mars is whether there has been liquid water on the martian surface and how the planet could have evolved from possible initial warm and wet conditions to the cold and dry present state. Virtually all models for this climatic evolution rely strongly on the removal of an initial thick carbon dioxide atmosphere by precipitation of carbonate minerals from surface ...
متن کاملFormations of Martian Plagioclases and Flow Textures by Carbon- Dioxides-rich Gas and Fluids Compared with Natural Rocks and Artificial Products on the Earth
Introduction: Water liquid has been considered to be main fluid in cold Mars, though major sources of liquid water are not clearly found on Martian surfaces. Recently author (Y.M.) found carbon-bearing grains on plagioclase composition in druses of terrestrial volcanic basalts in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan [1], where many scientists have been reported as normal “plagioclases” formed at hydro...
